Early morning waking: why your baby wakes at 5 am and how to fix it

By the Swaddle team · Reviewed October 25, 2026

The house is dark, you are exhausted, and your baby is up for the day at 5:05 am. Again. Early morning waking is one of the most common sleep complaints, partly because the last part of the night is when sleep is lightest and easiest to disrupt.

Why early mornings are tricky

By early morning, most of the night’s sleep pressure is used up, and sleep is lighter. Small things (a sliver of light, a garbage truck, a wet diaper, a bit of hunger) are more likely to wake a baby fully at 5 am than at midnight.

The usual causes, and fixes

CauseWhat to try
Light in the roomBlackout curtains or blinds. Even a little early light can wake light sleepers, especially in summer.
NoiseSteady white or brown noise at a low volume covers birds, traffic and the household waking up.
Bedtime too lateAn overtired baby often wakes early. Try bedtime 15 to 30 minutes earlier.
Last wake window too longUse the bedtime calculator to check it.
First nap too earlyIf your baby naps an hour after waking, the early start can become the day’s anchor. Push the first nap later by 10 minutes every few days.
Too much day sleepNear a nap transition, total day sleep may be too high. See split nights for how to check.
HungerA bigger feed before bed, or a feed at the early waking, may be needed for younger babies. Ask your pediatrician about night feeds.
ColdRoom temperature often drops before dawn. See what to wear to sleep.

Treat 5 am like night

If your baby wakes before 6 am, try to keep it feeling like nighttime: dim light, quiet voice, a feed if they need it, back in the crib. Starting the day (lights on, playing, breakfast) at 5 am tells the body clock that 5 am is morning.

When it is time to get up, make it obvious: open the curtains, say good morning, get some daylight. Morning light is one of the strongest signals for the body clock.

Be patient

Body clocks shift slowly. Give each change a week or two before trying the next one, and change one thing at a time so you know what worked. Some babies are simply early risers, and a 6 am start may be their normal.

Questions parents ask

What counts as early morning waking?

Most sleep consultants call waking for the day before about 6 am early morning waking. Between 6 and 7 am is a normal wake-up time for many babies.

Will a later bedtime make my baby sleep in?

Rarely. Babies often wake at the same time no matter when they go to sleep, and an overtired baby may wake even earlier. An earlier bedtime fixes early waking more often.

How long does it take to fix early waking?

Give any change at least a week or two. The body clock shifts slowly.
