Bedtime calculator

Usual bedtime

7:50 pm

For about 10 h 40 min of night sleep before a 7:00 am wake-up.

Tonight

-

Add the end of the last nap to see tonight's bedtime.

How the calculator works

It looks at bedtime two ways and you can use whichever fits your day:

  • Usual bedtime counts back from the morning wake-up by the typical night sleep for your baby's age, plus about 30 minutes to fall asleep, kept close to the age's usual bedtime.
  • Tonight adds the last wake window of the day (usually the longest one) to the end of the last nap. On a day of short naps, it is often earlier than usual, and that is fine.

If the two disagree by a lot, go for the earlier one. Overtired babies tend to fall asleep harder and wake more, while a bedtime that is a bit early rarely causes problems.

Before about 3 months, most babies have no set bedtime. Their longest stretch of sleep often starts late in the evening, and that is normal.

Signs bedtime is too late

  • Your baby cries hard at bedtime or fights the routine.
  • They wake 30 to 60 minutes after going down (a false start).
  • They wake very early, before 6 am.

Signs bedtime is too early

  • Your baby lies awake happily for a long time at bedtime.
  • They are awake for an hour or more in the middle of the night (a split night).

Questions parents ask

What time should a baby go to bed?

From about 3-4 months, many babies do well with a bedtime between 6:30 and 8 pm. Newborns have no set bedtime: their longest stretch often starts between 9 and 11 pm.

Is 7 pm too early for a baby bedtime?

No. For many babies from 4 months on, 7 pm is a very common bedtime, especially with a 6:30-7 am wake-up.

Will a later bedtime make my baby sleep in?

Usually not. Babies often wake at about the same time no matter when they go to bed, so a later bedtime can just mean less sleep. An overtired baby may even wake earlier.

How long before bed should the last nap end?

About one wake window, which is often the longest of the day. At 6 months that is around 2.5 to 3 hours; at 12 months about 3.5 to 4 hours.
